HRZZ approves the CALYPSO project

The Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) approved the research project “Precision simulations and calibration for tests of Lorentz invariance with extensive air showers” (CALYPSO, IP-2026-8139), led by Tomislav Terzić, within the call Research Projects (IP-2026). The results of the call were published on 16th of July 2026. The project will run from 2026 to 2029 with a budget of 199.525,00 EUR.

CALYPSO aims to establish a precision framework for tests of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) with extensive air showers. LIV modifications of particle propagation and interactions will be implemented in the air-shower simulation tool CORSIKA, and dedicated simulations will be used to identify observables most sensitive to LIV. On the experimental side, the project will develop an internal LED calibration unit for the outer-layer detector tanks of the Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO), for in-situ monitoring of photomultiplier timing and gain.

The project team includes Filip Reščić, José Manuel Carmona (University of Zaragoza), Marina Manganaro (University of Rijeka), Jelena Strišković (University of Osijek), and Mario Pecimotika (Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defense and Security University).
